You may wonder why they tend to ask about this particular service and not others, which is why this article is designed to explain the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indydentalgroup.com\/preventive-dentistry.html\">history of fluoride<\/a> as well as what benefits it provides to patients of all ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Did Fluoride Become a Popular Dental Treatment?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The history of this natural mineral dates back to the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century when a young, aspiring dentist, Dr. Frederick McKay opened a dental practice in Colorado Springs only to discover many of the residents possessed brown stains on their teeth. Curious as to the cause, he began doing research and eventually discovered after six years the issue of teeth mottling, also known as dental fluorosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working with researcher Dr. G.V. Black, the two also discovered that the stains were resistant to tooth decay. By 1923, McKay found there to be other cases of dental fluorosis in Idaho, causing locals to divulge that the stains appeared after a communal water pipeline was constructed nearby. Once it was decided the town would use a local spring instead of the pipeline for its water, the stains cleared up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This would then take McKay to Arkansas where residents also had problems with dental fluorosis. After analyzing a study of the water, the Aluminum Company of America\u2019s (ALCOA) chief chemist stated there was a high level of fluoride in the water. This eventually led the National Institute of Health (NIH) to develop a way to measure the safety levels of fluoride, which are now used today by dentists to prevent cavities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is Fluoride Beneficial?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all individuals need additional fluoride because they consume enough of it through city tap water or by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. Regular tooth brushing is also helpful because many of the most common toothpaste brands have it as an ingredient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, for those who are prone to cavities or do not have access to adequate sources of fluoride, seeing a dentist about additional treatment is pivotal.
