What is Causing My Invisalign to Not Fit Properly?

Struggling to figure out why your Invisalign aligners are not fitting properly? You might think you need an entirely new set, but before you jump to this conclusion, consider what else might be the problem. Believe it or not, there are several reasons your trays may feel uncomfortable while you’re wearing them. Keep reading to learn what they are.

Improper Fit: What is Wrong with Your Invisalign Aligners?

One of the benefits of Invisalign is its comfortable, fully customizable fit. Each set is designed for your smile, so when worn, your teeth will move properly over time. However, if you notice that they are not seated correctly (or comfortably), it may be that:

  • You’re not wearing them as long as you should. Average wear time is 20-22 hours a day. If you fail to meet this timeframe each day, you risk delaying your treatment, and you’ll notice your trays won’t fit as they should.
  • One or both of your aligners have become damaged. You may not realize there is a problem until you notice your tray isn’t fitting properly. Your dentist will need to assess the issue to determine next steps.
  • You have one or more stubborn teeth that are not shifting or are taking longer to move than expected. In this situation, your dentist will need to provide attachments to encourage these teeth to shift.

What Can You Do to Keep Treatment on Track?

Some problems may be out of your control (for example, stubborn teeth that are not moving), but others can be avoided if you agree to follow the treatment guidelines you’re provided.

Your dentist will give you detailed instructions to help you navigate daily life with your aligners. These tips will ensure everything continues to move along smoothly so that you don’t face any delays. You will need to:

  • Practice good oral health and hygiene by not only cleaning your teeth and gums but also your trays. If your aligners emit a foul odor, you may be less tempted to wear them, so keep up with your dental and Invisalign care.
  • Set a timer each time you take out your trays to remind you to reinsert them after you’re done eating. It’s advised that you do not devote more than one hour to dinner, 30 minutes to lunch, and 30 minutes to breakfast.
  • Use Invisalign Chewies to help your trays move into their proper place when inserting them.

Invisalign orthodontic treatment is meant to be a smooth process, but there can be bumps along the way. Fortunately, you can take the appropriate steps to keep things moving in the right direction.
